September 12, 1980 military coup took place; three years later, it was stated that the country had stabilized and general elections were held again; Not the Nationalist Democracy Party suggested by the tutelage administration, but the Motherland Party, which was supported by the public, won the election by collecting 45% of the votes. In 1983, the Turgut Özal Government moved away from the "External Import Substitution Economy Model" and adopted the "Forward Open Export Based Growth Model"; strict foreign exchange and foreign trade restrictions were abolished; export incentives began to be provided at the highest level. Our exports, which were 2.9 billion dollars in 1980, jumped to 11.6 billion dollars in 1985.
