Lately, the Ministry of Trade announced opening a tariff quota for corn imports with a five percent customs duty, not exceeding 1 million tonnes, valid until June 30th. The Presidential decision on the issue was published in the Official Gazette. In the written statement made by the Ministry of Trade, "Our Ministry of Trade takes the necessary measures by using all the tools of trade policies in coordination with the relevant institutions and organizations, mainly the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, by evaluating the welfare of producers and consumers together to prevent speculative prices by the directing the markets correctly, to ensure supply security basic food products and to meet the country's needs by promoting domestic production. To ensure the supply security and price stability of corn, which is used in animal feed, which is an important production input for meat, one of the basic consumption items of our citizens, as well as in some other food products, and to prevent food prices from being disastrous affected in this way, a tariff quota with 5 percent customs duty was issued for 1 million tones of the amount that domestic corn production is insufficient to meet consumption, to be used until June 30th, 2025. The import application with low customs duty for a limited amount of products will end as of July 1st, 2025, taking into account the need to protect the domestic producer and the harvest period of the product, and the customs duty on corn imports will be applied at the original level of 130 percent."
The statement also stated that "In order to ensure fair use of imports within the scope of the tariff quota, a maximum of 8 thousand tonnes can be imported by a user at a time and it will be necessary to wait 7 days for re-importation." It was also emphasized in the statement that the Ministry of Trade monitors the supply, demand, and price level in the market by taking the opinions of other institutions and organizations, especially the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and that essential arrangements will be made when necessary.
