According to the ‘2025 Renewable Capacity Statistics’ report published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the largest increase in renewable energy between 2020-2024 was observed in solar power plants. Solar energy, which increased by roughly 157.6 per cent, was followed by wind power plants with an increase of 54.4 per cent. The total installed capacity of global solar power plants increased to 1865 gigawatts, while the total installed capacity of wind power plants was 1133 gigawatts. In the same period, the installed capacity of biomass power plants increased by 15.3 per cent to 151 gigawatts, the installed capacity of geothermal power plants increased by 7 per cent to 15 gigawatts, and the capacity of hydroelectric power plants increased by 6 per cent to 1283 gigawatts. In the end, with ocean energy with a total installed capacity of 494 megawatts, global renewable energy capacity increased by 58.1 per cent to 4448 gigawatts in the 2020-2024 period.
Asia ranked first in renewable energy capacity increase with 83 per cent. The significance of clean energy in combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions is increasing day by day. In this context, the energy policies of many countries include increasing the use of clean energy resources. Türkiye has also taken its place among the countries with a significant increase in clean energy capacity worldwide. Türkiye, which increased its renewable energy installed capacity by 40.8 per cent in 2020-2024, has set its target for renewable energy sources within the scope of the ‘2053 Net 0 Emission Target’ as increasing the installed capacity of solar and wind energy by 4 times to 120 thousand megawatts by 2035. Between 2020 and 2024, Türkiye increased the installed capacity of solar power plants by 198.2 percent, wind power plants by 46.8 percent, biomass power plants by 82.8 percent, geothermal power plants by 7.5 percent and hydroelectric power plants by 4.5 percent.
