The European Union (EU) announced its new energy action plan. The main objective of the plan is to decrease the fossil imports of EU member states and save 45 billion Euros. The ‘Affordable Energy Action Plan’, which is shared under the title of ‘Clean Industry Consensus’, includes issues such as reducing energy costs, increasing investment in this field, and being ready for possible energy crises.
Under the new energy plan;
- Cooperation of Member States on energy issues will be enhanced
- The focus will be on energy prices, which have a negative impact on EU competitiveness.
- Efforts will be made to narrow the gap in energy prices between the EU and its competitors.
- For the purpose of making electricity prices more affordable, the Commission will take administrative measures on energy bills, network, taxes, levies, charges, system and supply costs.
- Member States will be asked to decrease national taxes on electricity and to make it easier for consumers to switch suppliers.
-The Commission will support the introduction of long-term supply contracts to end the relationship between retail electricity bills and high and volatile gas prices.
-In order to decrease the network costs in the energy bill, a method will be evolved to ensure that the network costs reflect the costs of the energy system.
- Renewable energy investments will be increased and accelerated.
- Efforts will be made to popularise energy efficiency solutions,
- In cooperation with the European Investment Bank, guarantee plans will be established to reduce the risks of investments in energy efficiency services.
- The relevant authorities will increase their scrutiny and monitoring of EU gas markets in order to prevent high gas prices.
Relevant institutions will increase inspections and audits of EU gas markets to prevent high gas prices.
Communication with liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers will be enhanced to ensure reliable and affordable supply. Collective purchasing power will be used to pool member states' demand for gas, thus making more affordable prices available.
- Efforts will be made to decarbonise the energy system and digitalisation of the energy system will be ensured
- Energy supply security will be prioritised to ensure price stability.
The Affordable Energy Action Plan is expected to save 45 billion euros from fossil fuel imports by 2025. This amount will reach 130 billion euros annually by 2030 and 260 billion euros by 2040.
