On June 21st, 2024, the Turkish Grain Board introduced a quota system for wheat imports. The decision, which was aimed at melting the wheat in stock, was extended on the 15th of October, and the export-oriented production sectors could import 15 percent of the wheat they needed within the scope of the Inward Processing Regime and the remaining 85 percent of the need could be met through the Turkish Grain Board. Considering the price balance and competition in foreign markets, the ratio was later updated as 75 percent domestic and 25 percent imported wheat. The restriction on wheat imports, which was applied for nine months within the scope of the Inward Processing Regime, was dismissed with the latest decision. According to the decision, flour industrialists will be able to import wheat without any restrictions under the Inward Processing Regime. The decision to lift the quota ban, for which no official announcement has been made yet, was announced to the industry representatives. Industry representatives stated that the Turkish Grain Board was able to draw its stocks to the targeted level in this process, and the excess product in open stacks was melted. In addition, it was pointed out that the quota system was abolished to provide flexibility against the danger of droughts that may happen in the future.
